Formelle forudsætninger:There are no formal prerequisites, but at least basic familiarity with a programming language is necessary.

 
Læringsmål: After this course, students should be able to:

* Identify different genres of persuasive and serious games
* Characterise persuasive/learning mechanics typically used for different genres
* Compare and contrast approaches used in different games and genres
* Argue the advantages and disadvantages of matching particular game mechanics with persuasive/learning objectives
* Reflect on the ethics of persuasive and serious games
* Design a persuasive/serious game on a topic of their choosing (within reason!)
* Develop a prototype of the persuasive/serious game design
* Evaluate the outcomes of the designed game using a mix of playtesting and other user research methods 
Fagligt indhold: This course centres on the design of persuasive and serious games. It will culminate in students designing and developing a persuasive/serious game prototype on a topic and platform of their choosing.

While the course will be quite practically-oriented, the first half of the course will focus on design, persuasion, and mechanics analyses of existing persuasive/serious games belonging to genres such as military games, political games, activism games, learning games, social awareness games,behavior change games, advergames, and exergames.

Harnessing what they have learnt from the first half of the course, students will then form teams of 3 - 5, and select a topic and specific objective for which to develop a persuasive/serious game. Each team will then design and develop their own serious/persuasive game using agile development methods, and create rapid, iterative prototypes. As the prototypes become more complete, each team will be matched with students from the Applied HCI for Games course, who will provide assessment and evaluation feedback on the games. Following the evaluations, teams will have time to complete another couple of development iterations to refine their games in accordance with the feedback.

At the end of the semester, all teams must present their games to the class. 
Læringsaktiviteter:

Class sessions, consisting of lectures and exercises, take place on Fridays. Students are expected to attend the lectures and participate in the exercises.

The sessions for the first half of the semester are structured as follows:

Mornings (11 - 1):
Lecture, discussions, and exercises surrounding the lecture content, assigned readings, and assigned games.

Afternoon (1:45 - 3:45):
Lecture, discussions, and exercises surrounding the lecture content, assigned readings, and assigned games. The afternoon session will be held in the game lab.

For the second half of the semester, both sessions will primarily serve as guided design/development time for groups to work on the game that they will submit at the end of the course.

The students are to hand in a production (=a game) at the end of the term.
The oral examination discusses the game and the litterature used on the course.
