Fagligt indhold:The mobile communication specialization is designed to give students insight into the regulatory, business, design and the social consequences of the mobile media and communications industry. As is obvious, there are many different areas of mobile media and communication, involving many actors and an increasing uptake by users. The course introduces mobile media and communication from a global perspective. Students become familiar with how the mobile has become deeply embedded into the textures of everyday life, both on the go and at home, and both for mobile communication and for mobile media.

The students are introduced to how the mobile has even become taken for granted among citizens and institutions. Moving to the business portion of the class we can acknowledge that since mobile media and communication has grown into a major industry, there are many actors who are involved. This part introduces innovation from the perspectives of business, value, management and participation. The historical convergence between telecom and computers is discussed, focusing implications to the technological nature of mobile and its businesses. Providing more in-depth, legacy media companies are scrutinized to understand their social shaping of mobile media services. This social shaping concerns how perceptions about technologies and social uses can be utilized for developing the design of mobile services. The mobile handset and mobile service design is an important area. This is increasingly true as different types of net enabled handsets are being developed and as Apps are arriving on the scene.

The course then returns to the social dimension. At first the course touches base with how the mobile facilitates social cohesion, as well as raises discussions on the anti-social patterns arising from contemporary smartphone usage. Following from that, importance of social networks and critical mass are discussed. Following from that, the In the case of regulation there are different regulatory approaches practiced around the world. These include more vertically integrated regimes, such as that in Japan, those that are more market driven, i.e. the US and systems where regulators interact with market mechanisms such as in Europe. In addition there are regulations associated with the establishment of companies, regulation of resellers and general issues associated with regulation of radio frequency.

Finally, there are regulatory issues concerning privacy. Ultimately the course opens for readings and discussions on emerging usage patterns and the future of mobile media and communication. The social consequences of the mobile phone and mobile media are being felt in both the developed world and, perhaps more importantly, in the broader global context. The course will help the student to characterize and understand these issues.
Læringsaktiviteter:

14 weeks teaching including lectures, reading discussions and exercises .

The teachers are responsible for organizing the seminars, finding relevant readings, and preparing the exams. It is the responsibility of the student to be an active participant in the class, having read the expected material and be ready to discuss it, answering any related questions.

The course will have the following mandatory assignments:

1. At least eight blog posts on class readings
2. Student presentation/discussion questions (once a semester).
3. Students must write a final paper by completing a series four individual assignments:

A one paragraph statement of your proposed topic. For help with writing your paper proposal look at the Online Writing Lab at Purdue's University: http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/545/01/ (Friday October 19).
An annotated initial list of 5 sources relevant to your topic; at least 3 of these must be scholarly journals or books. Information on what a scholarly source is can be found at http://olinuris.library.cornell.edu/ref/research/skill28.htm (Tuesday 23 October).
Paper outline. A good example on how to write a paper outline can be found at the Online Writing Lab at Purdue's University: http://owl.english.purdue.edu/handouts/general/gl_outlinS.html (Friday November 16)
The final paper (This is due Wednesday December 12) at the latest 15:00 in the exam office 2E. They close the door at 15:01)

For additional help on writing your paper look at the following Workshop: http://owl.english.purdue.edu/workshops/hypertext/ResearchW/index.html
