Information about the course of study
This course is mandatory for students who are enrolled on the Master of Science in IT, study programme Digital Design and Communication. See a description of DDK here: Master of Science Digital Design and Communication

Læringsmål:After the course, students should be able to:

• Describe and discuss the overall process of developing a digital product/service from the initial concept to its launch
• Understand, describe and discuss the structural contexts that matter for the creation and development of ideas about digital products/services
• Recognize and critique the key concepts (e.g., innovation, creativity) in the development of new ideas
• Create a business model and business plan about a fully developed concept for a product or service that is persuasive and viable in terms of design, technology, profitability (or alternative measures of success) and adoption.
• Reflect critically–using the course readings–about their own process of developing a concept for a product/service

Fagligt indhold:The course objective is to gain theoretical knowledge and practical skills in developing a product/service from the very first idea to its launch, including innovation, concept development, and project management.

Throughout the course, students–working in small project teams–will go through the process of creating an idea for a product/service and developing it from an idea to fully developed “business case” for its launch. The emphasis will be on products or services that relate to or heavily involve digital media.

In the process, students will learn about and develop the broad range of skills required for this process, including encouraging creative and innovative thinking, project management/planning, marketing and market research, managing design, and product development.

Læringsaktiviteter:14 ugers undervisning bestående af forelæsninger og øvelser

14 weeks of teaching consisting of lectures and work sessions.

The course consists of 14 weeks of lectures and work sessions. The lectures will be conducted primarily by the teacher, but will involve student participation and occasionally student presentations. The exercise classes will involve working in small groups on practice exercises and toward to the final project report.

The final project report will be a 30-page written document that includes:

1) a concept report about the chosen concept, as well as about the discarded ones;
2) a business plan and model for the concept; and
3) a reflection on the process of developing the concept that integrates the course readings.

Students will work in groups of 4-5 members. Each group will produce a final project report and make a presentation to the class during lecture at the end of the semester.

Halfway through the semester (the date will be announced in lecture), students are required to submit a 5-7 page document that includes:
1) a description of their chosen concept;
2) a rough outline of their business plan/model; and
3) a critical reflection of the challenges and successes of the process at that point.

During the semester, students will also be required to make a short presentation about their chosen concept and business plan/model. Students will receive feedback about their mid-semester report and presentation from the instructor and possibly guest lecturers.

NB! Course restriction II!
Note that there is a large overlap between this course and the course Concept Development and Interactive Digital Media. This means that you do not can take this course if you took the Concept and Interactive Digital Media.
