Formelle forudsætninger:As a prequisite to the project cluster, students should have a solid grasp of of network technologies in general and in particular the basic internet protocols (as provided by, e.g., the course Network and Protocols).

Læringsmål:The aim of the project cluster is to introduce students to the challenging discipline of building applications, based on the various internet technologies, for organizations and communities.

The history of internet technologies in organizations and communities shows well-known successes but also very many - not so well known - dismal failures. The project cluster does not offer recipies (none exist) but will offer students ample opportunities to develop the analytic and constructive skills required to meet the challenges.
Having followed the project cluster attentively and successfully, student should be able to

  • subject the complex and varified reality of modern organizations to a critical and realistic analysis;

  • play an active and responsible role in the design and construction of internet technologies in organizations and communities.
  •
    Fagligt indhold:The project cluster will first provide an overview of the array of internet technologies, such as high-level protocols, that are relevant for building applications, and will then examine the lessons learned from building actual applications of these technologies in organizations. The project cluster will conclude by giving an introduction to organizational theories that offer a conceptual foundation for analyzing the requirements of target communities or organizational settings and for identifying organizational (sociological and economic) risks.

    The project cluster aims at covering the following topics:

    Internet technologies, in particular medium-level protocols, such as, for example, WebDAV, instant messaging and chat, weblogs, peer-to-peer, WikiWiki, etc., as well as advanced technologies such as Open Hypermedia.

    Applications: types and cases, e.g.:
  • Knowledge management systems
  • Project management systems
  • Document management systems
  • Workflow management systems
  • Community-enabling systems...

    Organizational theories, e.g.:
  • Organizations as coalitions (divergent interests, motivations, cultures, perspectives, approaches, etc.)
  • Organizations as hierarchies and markets (Transaction Cost theory)
  • Economic theories (issues of performance measurement, invisible costs).
