• identify, evaluate, and apply different theoretical lenses on digital democratic citizenship and its limitations through privacy and surveillance,

• and identify a current and original research question and carry out an empirical study related to digital democratic citizenship based on the theories and methods discussed in class.
Fagligt indhold:Digital media technologies have been accompanied by a vast array of new media forms, such as social networking sites, blogs, micro-blogs, smartphone apps, image sharing services, and micro-movies, which offer new forms of expression as well as documentation, navigation, monitoring and surveillance techniques that impact potentials and challenges that citizens experience in digital society. Citizens can make their voices heard and tell their own stories for mass distribution. They can join politicians, activists, advocacy groups, and media professionals in performing digital democratic. Many would argue that new media technologies reshape how we vote, protest, resist, deliberate, participate, organize, travel/move and manage our everyday lives as citizens in a democratic society.

In this course, we will explore these claims as we survey contemporary theories and statements about the impact of digital media on citizenship and democracy. In the first part of the course, we will focus on mapping the field and getting familiar with state of the art theory and prominent cases that can illuminate what we are talking about. Do digital media fundamentally alter the nature of democracy? How should we redefine democratic citizenship in a digital society? How do we make our voices heard in today’s over-mediated society? What problems do we face for a democracy due to surveillance techniques and privacy concerns? How do we have to rethink governance and business models based on data produced by citizens and their use for profiling and targeted advertising?
In the second half of the course, we will focus on doing research and implementing research results in this particular area.
In order to answer the questions we raise, we will explore the dynamics of digital media, democracy, and citizenship as well as how they have continually shaped and been shaped by one another. The course will increase students’ ability to apply ethical thinking and judgment to a wide range of related problems and to interpret how using complex and powerful technologies to collect personal data can impact individuals, corporations, markets, and societies.
Læringsaktiviteter:14 ugers undervisning bestående af forelæsninger, øvelser og vejledning

We plan to concentrate some of the lectures and practice lessons in seminars in order to make space for lecture free weeks where the students can focus on their research project.
We will discuss and explore the dynamics of digital media, democracy, and citizenship. You will respond to claims by journalists and media-makers about digital democratic citizenship, sharpen your analytical skills using theories of digital democratic citizenship, experiment on social media, collect empirical data and, discuss the results in class and in writing. We will invite researchers of the Democracy and Citizenship in Digital Society (DECIDIS) initiative at the IT University of Copenhagen to present and discuss their research projects in the light of the issues discussed in class.

We expect students to come prepared to each lecture and to engage actively in course activities in-class and specified week-to-week activities.
