Læringsmål:As still more companies realise that economic prosperity rests upon knowledge and its useful application, complex knowledge becomes increasingly important and relevant to them. In addition, a growing number of companies compete in global markets with intensified competition.

In these circumstances, the ability to constantly exploit existing knowledge while exploring new knowledge and knowledge domains is critical. Only through such efforts will companies be able to maintain their competitiveness and keep up with customer demands.

The issue of knowledge management has drawn a lot of attention resulting in a rather broad field with different research foci and interests. The purpose of the course is to introduce students to various theories of Knowledge Management in order gain an understanding of how these may be applied in various situations.

To provide a constructive as well as critical view of knowledge management, the course will discuss how the various approaches draw from different understandings of the concepts of knowledge and management. Based on this understanding, the course will help the students to reflect upon these various approaches and to consider their applicability to different business challenges.

Finally, the students will gain an understanding of how knowledge management constitutes an integral part of business management, linking areas such as business strategy, organisation, people/human resources and technology.
Fagligt indhold:For today¿s companies, knowledge is becoming an increasingly important part of the resource base. Part of the explanation is that goods and services in demand are becoming still more intangible. In addition, the complexity and unpredictability of the market require constant innovation, responsiveness and ability to change at all levels of the organisation.

Hence, the ability to manage the collective knowledge of the organisation in an efficient, flexible and focused manner is becoming one of the most critical competitive factors in the global market.

Knowledge Management teaches how organisations address these issues. The course will provide an understanding on how a company may manage knowledge, both strategically and dynamically. Furthermore, the course will teach how knowledge management may be included as a natural component in other processes throughout the organisation. Students will be introduced to a number of theories within the field of knowledge management. Furthermore, tangible methods and relevant technologies will be discussed. Students will be involved actively with the aim of applying theories and methods to actual issues.

Upon completion, students will be capable of:
  • Discussing various theories of knowledge management and apply these theories analysing an actual organisation.

  • Discussing and applying different strategies of knowledge management.
  • Discussing technologies as these relate to knowledge management, including the eligibility of particular technologies in relation to different knowledge management processes.
  • Understanding how strategy, organisation, people/human resources and technology interact as a comprehensive knowledge system in an organisation.
