Formelle forudsætninger:This is the final course in the DDK specialization "Social and Cultural IT", it is therefore expected that the students can use the methods learned in the first course of the specialization. If you are joining the course as a guest or taking it as an elective, you will need similar skills in qualitative methods.

Study structure
This course is the second part of a specialization on the Master of Science in IT, study programme Digital Design and Communication. See a description of specializations on DDK here (in Danish): Kandidat Digital design og kommunikation
Læringsmål: After the course the student should be be able to:

1. Discuss the different notions of digital culture and society and their implications when studying digital communication.

2. Relate digital culture and society to a broader historical context of information and communication technologies.

3. Discuss different methodological perspectives in the study of digital culture and society and apply them in practice.

4. Apply key theoretical concepts within the field of digital culture and society and individually develop a theoretical framework for a research project.

5. Individually identify a current and original research question and carry out a study with the theories and methods discussed in the course as a point of departure.

Fagligt indhold:The most important prerequisite for this course is being creative and curious about theory and its relationship to contemporary digital society and culture. Relevant questions that will be discussed are:

How did culture, technology and society evolve over history? How do dystopia and utopia frame digital cultures as we know them today? What are digital culture and society? Why do remix-cultures imply exploitation of labor when viewed from a critical theory perspective? What is a digital public sphere? Are we living in a network society? What is power in digital cultures and societies? How do digital technologies change journalism and news production? How do new protest cultures emerge in digital societies? How do digital cultures shape and are shaped by contemporary societies? What roles do intellectual property rights play? How does the entertainment industry change? How do gamers act in virtual worlds? And how can we develop media and communication policies that take all these questions into account? What do we have to rethink?

The aim is to understand the interrelationship between digital culture and society and technology and develop analytical and methodological skills framed by the theoretical concepts discussed. This course should enable the students to develop their own research projects embedded in a relevant theoretical framework and with a respective methodological framework. The questions above are discussed in order to enhance individual projects and their theoretical framework, research question, case and methods.

Læringsaktiviteter:14 ugers undervisning bestående af forelæsninger og øvelser

The course will be taught as a mixed lecture/seminar where the teacher will steer the discussion, but the students are expected to contribute actively by presenting themes and participate in the debate each week. It is expected that students participate in the different elements of the seminar (preparation, discussion and exercises). Students will also be responsible for contributing to a collective course space (blog, twitter).

The course will have a significant focus on the students developing their own independent research project which will be presented for other members of the class in a mandatory presentation seminar at the end of the course.

The class takes up 15 ECTS and thus covers half of the time for a full time student. Consequently you can expect to use approximately 18 hours a week on the class (four hours in the actual seminar and the rest in preparation, reading and in project work).
