Kursusbeskrivelse
Kursusnavn (dansk):Billedanalysens grundlag
Kursusnavn (engelsk):Foundations of Image Analysis
Semester:Efterår 2004
Udbydes under:cand.it., multimedieteknologi (mmt)
Omfang i ECTS:7,50
Kursussprog:Engelsk
Kursushjemmeside:https://learnit.itu.dk
Min. antal deltagere:
Forventet antal deltagere:15
Maks. antal deltagere:50
Formelle forudsætninger:You should have completed an introductory course in image analysis such as the \"Image Analysis\" course at ITU and you should have mathematical maturity (at least know mathematics at a level of Danish high school mathematics A).
Læringsmål:This course focuses on teaching students advanced image analysis methods using the newest research with in the field. The topics covered on the course are the research areas of the teachers.

The goal is to teach the students the mathematical foundations of image analysis. After completing this course you will be able to understand in-depth, choose between, and apply advanced image analysis methods. Specifically, you will be able to understand and apply results from research papers on image analysis.

You will get practical experience with, including own implementations of, the discussed methods during the exercises.

This course is an excellent starting point for a master thesis project in image analysis.
Fagligt indhold:At this course you will be introduced to the topics:

  • Linear scale space theory

  • Non-linear scale space theory and Partial Differential
    Equation (PDE) based image analysis.

  • Variational calculus methods.

  • Bayesian statistics.

  • Statistical image analysis with a focus on the connection with PDE\'s.

  • Statistical pattern recognition techniques.

The contents of this course will not overlap with the contents of the \"Advanced Image Analysis\" course.

As further information you might find it intersting to look at the <a href=\"http://www.itu.dk/image/\">Image Analysis Groups home page.

Examples of the use of PDE\'s and variational methods can be found <a href=\"http://www.mia.uni-saarland.de/research.html\">here.
Læringsaktiviteter:

Lectures and exercises.

The lectures will focus on developing the theory and will demonstrate applications of this theory.

The exercises will be a combination of hands-on experiments and theoretical pen-and-paper exercises.

NB! In the introductory week, meaning from 27 August to 2 September 2004, exercises from 13:00 to 16:00 are cancelled. This means, that there will be only lectures from 9:00 to 12:00

Eksamensform og -beskrivelse:X. experimental examination form (7-scale; external exam), Bestået/ikke bestået, Intern censur

Oral exam with preparation time.

The student will draw an exam question and will have 30 minutes of preparation time. The examination is approximately 25 minutes where the student should give a 10-15 minutes presentation based on the drawn question. Following the presentation the student will engage in a discussion with the examinator based on the course curriculum.

Litteratur udover forskningsartikler:Selected scientific papers which will be distributed at the course.
