Kursusnavn (engelsk):Navigating Complexity Mapping Visualisation and Decisionmaking
Semester:Efterår 2013
Udbydes under:cand.it., Digital Innovation & Management (dim)
Omfang i ECTS:15,00
Kursussprog:Engelsk
Kursushjemmeside:https://learnit.itu.dk
Min. antal deltagere:12
Forventet antal deltagere:75
Maks. antal deltagere:80
Formelle forudsætninger:Please note that this course is only available for students enrolled in the programme Digital Innovation & Management.
Læringsmål:Having completed the course, the student should be able to:

1. Based on the course literature identify strategies for handling complexity pertaining to IT innovation.
2. Identify differences in ways of representing complexity including the choice of methods and materials to analyze and discuss the effects of such representations.
3. Generate digital case materials that will allow for the visualization of and decision-making regarding an IT innovation controversy.
4. Evaluate and discuss the potentials of the visualizations made at the course and their potential as well as pitfalls with respect to informing organizational decision-making.
Fagligt indhold:Firmly rooted in a robust experimental Science and Technology Studies (STS) this course will teach students to use a set of analytical and practical tools to visualize and analyze complex knowledge fields. They will experience complexity and use these experiences – along with case materials - as a way into the theme of the course. Students will learn how to present proposals for decision-making based on concerns and experienced problems in these fields. The students will conceptualize and discuss the implications of different mapping and visualization techniques, including the opportunities and constraints they entail. In their project, students will collect digital materials about a real life challenge, controversy or concern that will be scrutinized to mapping, analysis, and visualization. Aiming to inform decision-making processes in organizations, the students will be able to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the tools and the results. The aim of the course is thus to make the students capable of dealing with, communicate and act constructively in situations faced by complex challenges and without obvious or straightforward solutions presenting themselves.
Læringsaktiviteter:

Each week students have 2x2 hours of lecture and 2x2 hours of exercises (10-14 Tuesdays and 10-14 Fridays).
Lectures will be a mix of regular lectures, skype lectures and case presentations held by the teachers with TA attendance. Apart from lectures held by the anchor teachers guest lecturers will be conducted by experts in the field.
During exercises students will be divided into groups of 20. The groups will work with one TA each and the time will be dedicated to working practically with the topic of the day and preparing for next week’s readings (collect data, outlining of concepts, discuss assignments).
The curriculum is designed to provide students with some basic insights with respect to representation and objectivity in STS. The students will be sensitized to complexity. We first draw on examples of navigating complexity from their own lives in order to later let them work with cases of navigating complexity that focuses on IT innovation in an organizational/business context. Students will learn to distinguish between two main positions with regards to navigating complexity (contrasting moments situating/abstracting).

Obligatoriske aktivititer:To root the learning in students' own experience there are two mandatory assignments (written exercises).
Eksamensform og -beskrivelse:X. experimental examination form (7-scale; external exam), 7-trins-skala, Ekstern censur

Reports are handed in by groups. The student is examined individually in the syllabus as well as the hand-in.

Duration of the oral exam: 20 minutes per student incl. assessment and feedback.

Litteratur udover forskningsartikler:To be announced.
