Formelle forudsætninger:This course is the second part of the specialization in 'Designing Interactive Artifacts'.

In order to participate in this course you must have completed the first part of the specialization in Designing Interactive Artifacts (Specialization Part I).


Experience with physical computing and simple programming will be an advantage, interest in hands-on working with technology and materials is important.
 
Læringsmål:After the course the student should be able to:
- Account for the scientifically documented design methods and techniques in Interaction Design.
- Discuss the pros and cons of these methods and techniques for specific design problems.
- Plan a design project in Interaction Design and critically reflect on the choice of design method and techniques.
- Manage the realization of a focused Interaction Design project, including the application of design methods and techniques.
- Analyse scientific texts in Interaction Design (e.g. a conference paper) and discuss its research question(s), research method(s), and conclusions.
- Document focused Interaction Design projects according to the format of scientific texts in the field (e.g. as conference/workshop papers).
- Identify the major research traditions in the field, and account for their historical roots. 
Fagligt indhold:The students will be exposed to the most important design methods and techniques in Interaction Design, and will be required to discuss in class and/or groups the pros and cons of these for specific design problems. The students will further be exposed to the major research traditions in the field and their historical roots.

A number of important scientific texts in the field will be thoroughly analysed in class, with a focus on formal element such as introduction, background, research questions, research design, results, analysis, and conclusions. In addition, each student is required to present an analysis of at least one paper in class during the course.

The students will critically explore the aesthetic and functional potential of technology through practice-based engagement in interaction design projects. The course will focus on developing conceptually challenging projects that initiate reflection on design methods/techniques and research traditions.

The students will carry out three medium-scale design projects that are based on combination of physical artifacts, technology and humans. The aim is to develop a further understanding of interaction design and to develop strategies to apply this understanding to their projects through an exploration of various design techniques. Critical viewpoints and approach in the project development are encouraged, which have a potential to inspire debates about the technology’s impact on humans; both positive and negative.

The student groups will be required to be document their projects according to the format of scientific texts in the field (e.g. as a conference/workshop paper). 
Læringsaktiviteter:14 ugers undervisning bestående af forelæsninger, øvelser og vejledning

- Lectures by instructors and guest lectures
- Oral presentation by students in class of scientific papers, with following discussion.
- Group work on projects and related activities
- Participation in critique sessions and discussions concerning one’s own as well as peers’ projects.
- Provided readings: course related reading and special group-related reading. This forms the course syllabus.
- Support on practical skills
- It is expected that the students participate actively in the class activities, discussions, critique sessions and project work carried out throughout the course.

Students/groups are required to have Arduino microcontroller kit with experimental board (breadboard), for example “Arduino grundlæggende starter kit” (Let-elektronik.dk) or comparable. 

Obligatoriske aktivititer:- Oral presentation in class of at least one scientific paper in Interaction Design.
- Participation in three small group projects.
- Participation in the oral presentation of the three group projects.
- Participation in the written reports from the three group projects. 
Eksamensform og -beskrivelse:X. experimental examination form (7-scale; external exam), 7-trins-skala, Ekstern prøve

External examiner, 7-point marking scale, D1G Hand-in for groups with following oral exam based on the hand-in. Shared responsibility for the report.

A report and presentation of the realized project by groups and an individual oral exam.

The duration of the oral exam is 30 minutes per student
