Kursusbeskrivelse
Kursusnavn (dansk):Locative Media
Kursusnavn (engelsk):Locative Media
Semester:Forår 2017
Udbydes under:Bachelor i digitale medier og design (bdmd)
Omfang i ECTS:7,50
Kursussprog:Engelsk
Kursushjemmeside:https://learnit.itu.dk
Min. antal deltagere:15
Forventet antal deltagere:
Maks. antal deltagere:45
Formelle forudsætninger:Basic skills in programming.
Læringsmål:After completing the course, students will be able to
• define and understand central concepts in Locative media, including location, space and place, and their dynamic relation to digital technology
• understand basic technology and infrastructure for supporting location-based media
• plan and conduct a design project for a locative media application, with a particular focus on the dynamics between media content and location
• select, motivate, combine and apply relevant theories and methods for studying, understanding and utilizing information about the dynamics between media content and location
• reflect on practical and theoretical aspects of the dynamics between media content and location, based on experience from designing a locative media application
Fagligt indhold:The course introduces Locative media as an area of design research and design practice. Locative media, broadly defined, is media of communication that are functionally bound to a location. The course provides an overview of basic concepts, theories and technologies in the area of Locative media, and applies them in a design project, using frontline prototyping tools. It also provides an overview of the history of Locative media, including research on the relation between space, place and digital technology.
Læringsaktiviteter:12 forelæsninger og 12 øvelsesgange

12 lectures + 12 exercise sessions
The learning activities span over 14 weeks with lectures and exercises.

During the course the students will design concepts for locative media applications, and prototype one application using designated tools (no or very little programming is needed). The course is divide into three blocks: (1) introductory lectures on locative media and exercises where an array of locative media examples are studied and tried out; (2) a design phase, where students work on designing locative media concepts in a live case; and (3) a prototyping phase, where each student group choose one design that is prototyped and evaluated in context. The design project includes two intermediary project presentations, and concludes with a final presentation, where a locative media application should be demonstrated.

Obligatoriske aktivititer:Attendance to the two intermediary project presentations, and the final project presentation, are mandatory.

What if the student fails to pass a mandatory activity:
In the case of absence, the student should hand in a written report on what was covered in the project presentation.

Be aware: The student will receive the grade NA (not approved) at the ordinary exam, if the mandatory activities are not approved and the student will use an exam attempt.
Eksamensform og -beskrivelse:D22: Aflevering med mundtlig eksamen suppleret af aflevering., (7-scale, external exam)

Group report (15 – 20 pages) documenting the application design project. Harvard system is used for referencing.

Group presentation of the application design project, including demonstration of the application.

The duration of the oral exam is 20 minutes pr. student including evaluation and feedback.

Groups must consist of 3-5 students.
