| Læringsmål: | This course aims to help students develop some of the fundamental knowledge
they need to undertake other technical courses and technical projects within
and outside the EBUSS program. It introduces students to key concepts in
operating systems, data communication and distributed systems as a basis for
them to build up and develop their understanding of computer technology.

| Fagligt indhold: | The first half of the course will cover operating system principles:
Introduction to Operating systems
¿ Basic concepts: Von Neumann architecture, Computer hardware (CPU, memory, I/O devices), Operating system components, abstractions
¿ Structured Computer Organization
¿ Processes and Threads
¿ CPU Scheduling and basic synchronization principles
¿ High level Synchronization and Inter-process communication
¿ Memory management
The second half of the course will cover distributed systems, networks and the internet:
Networks and Communication
¿ Introduction: how do individuals and organisations communicate?; what do they need to communicate?; the need for protocols; what measures of performance are needed?; what potential do computer networks offer?
¿ Fast tour of the underlying technologies: eg media; errors; frames and packets, leading to a multi-layer network model, ISO/OSI reference model.
¿ protocols at the various layers including TCP and UDP
¿ Ethernet including wireless
¿ Addressing
¿ client/server and P2P models
¿ Wide Area services; what the Internet sits on; public, private and VPNs
Distributed systems
¿ Introduction to distributed systems
¿ Distributed filesystems
The Internet and the World Wide Web (WWW)
¿ The HTTP protocol
¿ SMTP, mail servers and mail client protocols
¿ Introduction to HTML and cookies
¿ Electronic business on the WWW

| Læringsaktiviteter: | 12 forelæsninger + lejlighedsvis øvelser i forbindelse med undervisningen 12 x 3 lessons + exercises. In some weeks the lessons will be hold from 9:00-16:00. Further information will follow about this later.

| Eksamensform og -beskrivelse: | X. experimental examination form (7-scale; external exam), 13-skala, Intern censur 20 minutes oral exam based on an individual synopsis, which must be handed in at the EBUSS study secretariat, no later than 28. April 2006 at 15:00.
The exam will be held on 8. and/or 9. June 2006.
