Kursusnavn (engelsk):Usability and Accessibility
Semester:Efterår 2010
Udbydes under:cand.it., digital design og kommunikation (ddk)
Omfang i ECTS:15,00
Kursussprog:Engelsk
Kursushjemmeside:https://blog.itu.dk/DUST-E2010/
Min. antal deltagere:12
Forventet antal deltagere:40
Maks. antal deltagere:80
Formelle forudsætninger:Students are expected to have basic experience with design of IT applications, for example websites, on a level similar to that attained in the IT University courses Media and Communication and Webdesign og webkommunikation and Interaktionsdesign.
Læringsmål:After the course, the student should be able to:

* Identify and apply the most appropriate concepts and methods for the analysis of user interaction with websites and a range of other digital products (e.g. mobile devices, robots, kiosks, digital television).

* Apply quantitative and qualitative methods in their usability studies.

* Promote the uptake of usability in organisations.

* Identify innovative usability requirements and also requirements for universal access

Fagligt indhold:After the course, the student will be able to evaluate the usability and accessibility of a range of digital products. The student will be able to independently conduct usability and accessibility evaluations, write usability reports and demonstrate knowledge of the research and literature that inform the field. The student will also be able to recommend design modifications and inform the overall design process of the product.

Some of the topics we will work with:

Usability, accessibility, Universal Access, Inclusive Design, cognitive psychology, human factors psychology, design processes and methods, design standards and guidelines, user profile/persona creation, task analysis, heuristic evaluation, usability laboratory selection and set-up, evaluation methods, design for disabled people, mobile interfaces, cost-benefit of usabilty plus planning for a usability budget.

Læringsaktiviteter:14 ugers undervisning bestående af forelæsninger, øvelser og vejledning

The project is highly integrated with the lectures. The first 2 weeks of the course will be focused on building the project website.

The main body of the course (the next 10 weeks or so) will consist of lectures from 11 to 13 in the morning two days per week, with exercises from 13 :45to 15:45 on the same days.

The course is structured such that Day 1 morning lectures introduce new theory, Day 1 afternoon exercises are designed to allow students to understand how to apply the theory in a usability context (e.g. performing a heuristic evaluation of competing website designs).

Day 2 morning lectures review and expand on the theory from Wednesday, especially on how that theory relates to the project website. Day 2 afternoon is typically spent applying the theory to the website and modifying its design. Thus the project work is ongoing throughout the entire duration of the course.

Over the course of the semester, the project website will change considerably. Towards the end of the semester, the students will be able to perform a series of usability and accessibility evaluations on their project site, including user trials.

The project is the conclusion of the "user-centered design" specialization, thus it will integrate knowledge from both the "Experimental Design and Analysis" course the students took in the previous semester and the "Usability" fundaments laid out in the first part of the course.
